Challenges in Language and Communication Development: Their Origins and their Outcomes

Many parents and professionals assume that a child’s language development begins with her first words. A more contemporary approach to language development begins with an understanding of the foundational capacities which lead to the child’s ability to become a language user and a competent communicator.

When a child experiences delays and disruptions in language and communication, the result is often seen in challenges in behavior, play, and social emotional development. Understanding the intersect between and among developmental domains is central to providing intervention which will support the child’s integrated development and encourage attuned parenting.

In this talk, Dr. Gerber will highlight a developmental paradigm of language acquisition and illustrate how disruptions in language can lead to challenges in all aspects of development. The implications of understanding the foundational language capacities for mental health practitioners in particular will be addressed.

Dr. Gerber will also briefly introduce a series of books that she has written for parents to help them understand how particular cognitive, motor, social-emotional, and language developments unfold during the first year of life. The take home message of the 4 books is….

Everything babies do will add to their learning. But there is no more important experience for a child’s language and communication development than her relationship with her caregiver and the time spent playing together!
