Perinatal Mental Health: An Update for Clinicians

Fitelson, M.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, NY and Nicole Tchalim (Pacheco), M.D., Instructor of Clinical Psychiatry, Advanced Women's Mental Health Fellow, CUIMC Department of Psychiatry.
This webinar discussed the importance of mental health to maternal health and wellbeing, basic principles of shared decision-making when treating perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, reviewed treatment options for pregnant and postpartum people with psychiatric symptoms, and discussed currently known risks of commonly prescribed psychiatric medications in pregnancy and lactation.

- Describe the importance of mental health in maternal morbidity and mortality
- Apply a "risk-risk" analysis to treatment decisions in pregnancy and lactation that balances the risks of untreated illness with the known risks of treatments
- Discuss the currently known risks of commonly prescribed psychiatric medications in pregnancy and lactation
