Integrating Early Childhood Mental Health & Substance Use Recovery: Growing Together

Please join us to explore this important topic with Dr. Ruth Paris, Professor at Boston University School of Social Work and Associate Director for Research at the BU Institute for Early Childhood Well-Being.

In this webinar, the presenter briefly described current research relevant to parenting in the context of traumatic stress, substance use and co-occurring disorders (SUD/COD) and a rationale for the attachment-focused dyadic intervention (BRIGHT). Next, the intervention was described, detailing the emphases on promoting developmental progress and resilience while encouraging recovery from substance misuse, enhancing reflective functioning, and supporting emotion regulation. Finally, a case vignette was shared, and participants discussed treatment strategies.

Participants of this webinar were able to:

  • Discuss the impact of substance use disorder (SUD) and trauma on parenting and the parent-young child relationship.
  • Describe how BRIGHT, a therapeutic parenting intervention for pregnant and parenting women with substance use and co-occurring disorders (COD) and their young children, fits into their clinical work.
  • Assess interactions between a parent and young child through video recordings.
  • Apply the BRIGHT approach to clinical work with one parent with SUD and COD and their young child.

This webinar is for all of those working in the perinatal period as well as children birth to 5 and their families.
