Supporting Parents of Hospitalized Infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Beyond
The experience of families who are transitioning to parenting in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is challenging in a myriad of ways, whether parents are caring for a premature or full-term, critically ill baby. Multidisciplinary providers who work to support families while in the NICU and beyond require support to provide compassionate, family-centered care. The goal of this webinar was to immerse providers in common themes that characterize parents’ experiences to build understanding and knowledge. The workshop utilized examples of experiences in the NICU to highlight themes. There was a focus on ways to improve collaboration and connection with parents so that providers can more effectively provide services whether in the NICU or in later caregiving environments, as the legacy of the NICU impacts families beyond the NICU.
Participants in this webinar should be able to:
- Identify specific challenges many families face prior to coming to the NICU.
- Describe common themes that characterize parent experiences in the NICU based on qualitative research.
- Describe at least 3 communication strategies to use with families to avoid common pitfalls that early childhood providers encounter when working with current or former NICU families.
