Using Respectful Maternity Care to Advance Health Equity for Mother-Infant Dyads Affected by Opioid Use Disorder
Please join us to explore this important topic with Dr. Kelly McGlothen-Bell, Assistant Professor at the School of Nursing at UT Health San Antonio.
In the U.S., the current opioid crisis has resulted in a significant increase in opioid use disorder (OUD) among pregnant women and birthing people. Substance use disorders (SUD) in general, are highly stigmatized conditions. Due to existing stigma, pregnant and parenting individuals with OUD often avoid health care and recovery support services; therefore, important considerations exist for the removal of barriers that prevent this population from accessing life-saving services. Attendees learned the key strategies for applying respectful maternity care practices to support health equity and counteract harmful stigma in this patient population.
Participants of this webinar were able to:
- Summarize the effects of SUDs on pregnant women and birthing people and their infants
- Define stigma and implicit bias and how it manifests in the context of opioid use disorder during pregnancy
- Identify key components of respectful maternity care and its application as a health equity approach for opioid use disorder
- Discuss effective strategies to improve outcomes for mother-infant dyads affected by opioid use disorder
